Dominic Louis Iannotti, born on July 8, 1919, was an American hero. He was a World War II Veteran and a POW. He escaped the prison camp and followed the sound of the American artillery to get back to the American lines. In 1998, he was awarded the Bronze Star and Senator Dodd came to our house and presented it to him. He also received the Purple Heart.

My Uncle Dominic

My Uncle Dominic,
He was a constant in my life,
When I was a kid,
He taught me to ride my bike,
In the summer, my sister and I
played badminton and when
I knew he was coming home from work,
I would run down the street
to greet him,
My Uncle Dominic,
He was a constant in my life,
He took me to Banko’s
for my guitar lessons,
and we would talk with
Bruce, my guitar teacher,
They were both bachelors,
World War II Veterans and Italian,
My Uncle and I used to go to the
local high school football games,
we always had fun,
My Uncle Dominic,
He was a constant in my life,
He was there for every important moment,
My high school graduation,
My college graduation,
My first poem being published,
My first book being published,
He was always there encouraging me,
My Uncle Dominic,
He was a constant in my life,
My Mom, my sister and I went to see
the Broadway Plays with my Uncle,
He knew New York well,
He took us to New York City for a day of shopping
and we all had fun together, lunch at Rockefeller Center,
My Uncle Dominic,
He was a constant in my life,
He was a simple person,
Nothing fancy,
He just said how he felt,
He was an honest, good-hearted person
who always helped me out,
I spent many hours talking with him,
He was my confidant,
My Uncle Dominic,
He was a constant in my life,
For him the most important
things in life were his family,
as long as he had all of us,
and a good glass of wine,
and the Yankees playing baseball,
He was happy, and he always made us laugh,
My Uncle Dominic,
He was a constant in my life,
I will always love him,
My Uncle Dominic, my Angel.
I love you Uncle Dom!
